The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
